Parathosi 2012

The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries of the Direct Archdiocesan District of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese is excited to announce  Parathosi 2012, from April 27-29, 2012! Hosted by The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Paul in Hempstead, NY, this fun and exciting weekend will be a celebration of Hellenic song and dance, aiming to re-create the experience we all know and love from a small Greek village. Dance and Singing groups from all of the District’s parishes will be welcome to participate and the event will be open to the public.
Parathosi 2012 will be a way for the people of our District to come together in the spirit of fellowship and fun and to celebrate our Hellenic culture through our traditional songs and dances. It will allow groups from parishes across the region to showcase their knowledge of traditional dances and costumes, as well as traditional folk songs native to Greece.

In a nod to our rich cultural and ethnic tradition, Parathosi will not be focused on competition. We face competition in so many aspects of our everyday lives and we want to promote the Festival as an opportunity to express the joy and traditions of our Greek culture without competing against one another. We do not dance to be perfect or to be the best, but to express our love and admiration for our culture, a love and admiration that comes from deep within our beings. At Parathosi, the system of rating will instead focus on each individual group and their improvement over the course of their performances. The goal is to create an environment similar to a festival or panagiri, a time for celebration and jubilation!

Activities will include performances, workshops, a Panagiri for all participants and the public featuring live traditional and modern Greek music, and Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning. Information for churches and groups regarding performances, schedules and other information will be distributed at the Directors’ Meeting at St. Paul’s in Hempstead on November 9th for any group Director interested in participating.

Do not miss out on any aspect on this amazing weekend! Mark your calender now!
